War memorials get invisible security markings as campaign against metal thieves stepped up

* Marking-plaques.jpgWar memorials are to be given invisible security markings to deter the return of metal thieves.

Sutton Council has decided its memorials should be forensically marked to stop them becoming further targets for criminals, after 14 brass plaques commemorating Sutton's war dead were stolen from Carshalton war memorial last month. The theft came as it emerged nationally at least one wartime monument is being targeted every week because of the rising price of metal.
