The British Government will set up a "Cyber Reserve" to boost the UK's online defences against security threats and cyber crime.

According to the first annual update of the government's cyber security strategy, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) will run the operation and will bring in experts to support work protecting the country online.

Minister Francis Maude said in a written ministerial statement that the move was taken as the UK, which is "the most internet-based major economy", also suffers from cyber security breaches from "terrorists, fraudsters, rogue states and individual activists."

Maude, the Cabinet Office minister, said that full details of the scheme will be unveiled next year. "Working with the private sector to improve awareness of the need for better cyber security continues to be a priority," he said.

"We are now focusing our efforts on making sure that the right incentives and structures are in place to change behaviour in a sustainable way."
He added that the coalition government is also looking to "move towards the establishment of a UK National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT)", to act as a "focus point for international sharing of technical information"
