Automated Facial Recognition trials backed by UK Home Secretary

AI Legal Expert Comment

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has given his backing to the police in their trials of facial recognition cameras. Charlotte Walker-Osborn, International head of technology sector at global law firm Eversheds Sutherland comments:

"In spite of the immense pressure on policing and the benefits that this facial recognition technology can bring, a huge divergence in opinion still remains.

Public confidence is needed around the large amount of work technology suppliers have been doing to seek to improve the accuracy of its results, especially in relation to ethnic minorities and black people. As with all technology which utilises artificial intelligence, if the governments and companies that adopt this technology put in place sensible guidelines around its use, including around privacy, there are undoubted benefits. Achieving the right balance will be key here."
