Why you shouldn't ignore physical threats to your business

By Lee Jasper, Security Expert at ADT

A lot of attention on security has been focused on cyber-crime but it is the more traditional theft that is still most common and just as harmful. 63% of reported commercial crime in the retail sector was from shoplifting and 24% was from assault.

The figures make for worrying reading but there are ways to help protect your staff and business assets. As a business owner, there are many things you have to worry about, but your business' security doesn't have to be one of them.

We've created ADT Smart Business with you, the business owner in mind. It puts you in control, whether you're thousands of miles away or just around the corner. With just a press of a button on the dedicated app, you can set and unset the alarm, start camera recordings and track who's going in and out of your property. You can check your wi-fi cameras, set security alerts and even create scenarios. The system will also alert you when your alarm has been activated, allowing you to see for yourself via a camera feed.

With so many smart business security solutions on offer, the biggest challenge for SMEs is deciding which provider to invest in, and the one that will give you the greatest benefits. Most crucially however, it's important to invest in a smart business security solution that gives you multiple benefits, to protect from physical threats, as outlined below:

Trust
When we think of reported crime on businesses, we tend to assume it isn't anyone associated with the running of it. The majority of employees are honest, however there is always the occasional bad egg. According to research, over two thirds of British office based staff admitted to stealing from their workplace. It's these employees that contribute to the totalaverage cost of staff theft across the lifespan of a business adding up to a staggering £22,367. If the alarm detects someone outside the premises, cameras will start recording and send an alert to your smart device, giving you peace of mind that your business premises is always protected without ruffling employee feathers.

Remote CCTV and Access Control can give business owners complete control over who moves in and out of their premises and restrict who comes and goes with anything from key card access to audio and video entry, protecting your most valuable assets, granting access only to those you trust most within your business.

Peace of Mind
There are several different types of security system available to SMEs, but the best is undeniably a monitored security system. Installed and set up by a team of security professionals, taking away the stress of DIY set-up, monitored security systems also come complete with a dedicated team of specialists, keeping a watchful eye over your business premises 24 hours a day so you don't have to. Instead of being glued to a DIY security system's portal, obsessing over every motion-detected trigger, you can leave this in the capable hands of this expert team. They will acknowledge any alarm triggers within seconds, leaving you free to run your business in peace, safe in the knowledge that your assets are safe and secure.

Convenience
We all sometimes fall victim to bad internet connection hindering our activities. What's great is that our alarm systems have a separate GPRS connection that will keep your alarm system working and our dedicated monitoring professionals will alert you if an activation occurs. There is also unlimited cloud storage built in!

ADT Smart Business even thinks about the small things, like allowing you to turn the lights off remotely when you forget, making it the perfect new team member. By creating scenarios, you can even set your lights to temporarily switch on and off when movement is detected around the perimeter of the building, deterring those opportunist burglars.

ADT offers affordable ADT Smart Business packages for businesses of all sizes including:

ADT Smart Business with Keyholder Response - ADT will call you and your nominated keyholder, so you can respond quickly when your alarm is activated.

ADT Smart Business with Police Response - ADT notifies the police as well as you and your nominated keyholders when your alarm is triggered.

CCTV systems like ADT's high-definition cameras, give burglars no place to hide. Research has also revealed that 67% of UK burglars say CCTV deters them from targeting a business.

ADT has been protecting people and properties for over 150 years. ADT's history and commitment to creating new technology are just some of the reasons why more than 210,000 UK property owners trust us.
