A thief escaped with an estimated £1 million worth of jewellery after he tricked a locksmith into opening a Mayfair shop.

The man contacted the locksmith from outside Van Cleef & Arpels jeweller's in Bond Street and said that he had forgotten his keys, according to The Sun newspaper. The locksmith arrived within half an hour of being called about 10.30 on Wednesday evening and let the man in through the double glass doors. Police have not confirmed what was stolen but the thief is thought to have spent up to 45 minutes filling his pockets while the shop alarm rang out.
