This Week's News

Massive operation to protect Prince William and Kate along the royal wedding route

Every nook and cranny along the route that Prince William and Kate Middleton will take on their wedding day is being searched by police, reports The Daily Mail.

As Union Jack bunting goes up on Regent Street and flags are raised across central London, elsewhere the focus is on more sinister stuff in the form of a huge anti-terrorism operation.

Police have launched one of the biggest security operations the country has ever seen - estimated to cost £20 million - to protect William and Kate and world leaders.

Drains have been lifted, the insides of lampposts scoured and even the fronts of the boxes on pedestrian crossing buttons have been removed as every inch of the wedding route is searched for explosives.

Alarm engineers avoid wasted call-outs with Chiron's IRIS network scanner

* Chiron-IRIS-200.jpgAlarm engineers can avoid hours of wasted call-outs - and ensure more robust dual-path alarm transmission - using the GPRS network scan feature incorporated in the IRIS Touch alarm signaller range from Chiron Security Communications. IRIS Touch technology delivers 'right first time' installation and confirmation.

More customers are asking for multi-path alarm signalling instead of fixed lines, because it is less expensive and more flexible, so it's really useful for engineers to be able to see at-a-glance how good GSM/GPRS signal coverage is at any given site.

Double locking remains a hurdle to WAL

Walk Away Locking (WAL) offers the highest level of convenience because the user is not required to operate any vehicle or key fob controls in order to leave their vehicle and for it be locked behind them. It is offered by Renault and Cadillac on a range of models; Mercedes also offer it on their Sprinter van in Europe where it is also configured to automatically unlock and open the sliding side door to appeal to delivery drivers and other commercial users. SBD's international smart key user survey found that WAL was a highly desirable feature because of the increased convenience.

Although the vehicle is theoretically more secure because the user cannot forget to lock it, across Europe activating the double locking automatically is considered a safety concern because people may become trapped inside the vehicle. Therefore WAL systems do not activate the double locking, meaning that the vehicle is left in a less secure state than if the user had actively locked it. In the USA double locking is now illegal, but in Europe it is still considered a significant security benefit to prevent thieves from easily opening the doors.

NPA gives go-ahead for police to crack open safes found in tsunami ruins

Reports the Mainichi Daily News, Japan.

As the disaster cleanup continues across northeast Japan, police have found themselves in charge of a growing number of locked safes discovered in the debris; safes which the National Police Agency (NPA) now says can be forced open to determine their owners.

The NPA relayed its position on April 13 to the police forces in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures -- the three prefectures most severely damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The directive was in response to a request from the three prefectural police forces for permission to open the safes if no clue to their owners could be found on their exteriors.
