Locksmiths see free police car door unlocking service as competition

Despite paying for local licences to operate their businesses some US locksmiths are increasingly unhappy that the police have started opening locked car doors for the public free of charge.

This has come about since the introduction of a device known as 'the Big Easy'. One locksmith claimed that not only does he pay $400 for his licence, but he is now losing out on charging up to 25 - 30 customers a week $40 or more for his services, now provided free by the police.

However Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt said that police across the nation have opened locked car doors for years, using the Slim Jim tool. "This is something we've always done", he said.

Locksmith_Exhibition_logo-sml.jpgWith the Locksmiths' Exhibition now virtually sold out (get your skates on to reserve the last remaining stands) and promising to be the busiest and best locksmith dedicated two-day show ever in the UK, now's the time to think about where you are going to stay, and what to do on the Saturday night!

Some will want to go off quietly with colleagues to discuss the events of the day, others will doubtless 'go on the lash', but for most, a simple dinner after a long day on their feet and back to their rooms for a long soak in the bath will be called for.

British Transport Police deny armed security reports

British Transport Police are denying reports that it has beefed up security presence at subway stations and airports after new information emerged about the possibility of an attack being planned in or near London.

"We don't have armed officers in our stations," an unnamed source at the agency said last week.

"We have been briefed about how to respond to a Mumbai-style gun over the last few months. We don't comment on deployment of officers but I can tell you that we haven't cancelled any leave."

Several media outlets in England, citing anonymous security officials, had reported a stepped-up police presence in response to the potential threat.
