Security guards strike

Security guards and others regulated by a new law introduced in the Canadian province of Quebec plan to strike in protest.

Bill 88, adopted four years ago but with key measures that only kicked in on July 22, also covers a broad swath of the security industry - about 10,000 other non-unionised armed security guards, private detectives, bar bouncers, security consultants and locksmiths. It requires they obtain a minimum amount of training. Those covered by the law must also pay CAN$140 for an annual permit, up from CAN$38 -or face a fine of CAN$500 to CAN$10,000.
