Timpson plans 100-branch expansion

Cobbler and key-cutter Timpson said it plans to open another 100 branches by taking up space inside supermarkets, adding to more than 1,000 outlets across the UK.

Turnover increased by 3% or £4.5 million to £136.5 million as 88 new stores opened during the year, mainly in out-of-town Tesco and Sainsbury's supermarkets. A spokesperson for the company said:

"Fortunately, the opening of an out-of-town Timpson has very little effect on the turnover of existing shops, so our link with supermarkets provides a substantial route to grow the business. It will also increase our share of the dry cleaning market."

Timpson is also expanding its locksmith business, including cutting complicated car keys. A familiar name on the high street, the company has around 2,500 staff, including more than 170 ex-offenders.
