When we saw the news item below about the EU Data Retention Directive that requires member states to store vast amounts of telecommunications data, and the Commission's row with Germany (which refuses to implement it, saying it is unconstitutional) our first thoughts were, how does this affect the UK?

After checking their website, which had its most recent post concerning the matter dated September 2011, Locks and Security News rang the Information Commissioners Office this morning for an update, but as yet no-one was able to explain whether or not the UK was signed up to it.

It has often been said that "If someone can think it, someone else will make it." Now while this usually applies to technological advances based upon gimmicky ideas in Sci Fi literature, it now seems to us that Huxley's theme of an all-controlling Big Brother, expounded in his novel 1984, are coming to fruition. This should concern us all.
