North Wales police first to adopt new door security device

'Secure-Ring', said to be the only police-accredited security door chain on the UK market, is being tested by key community agencies in a pioneering new neighbourhood safety trial by Flintshire Community Safety Partnership.

Launched this spring by safety and security specialist Cardea Solutions, Secure-Ring incorporates a solid steel door restrictor, security chain and a ring that slips over the door handle. The restrictor enables the security chain to be used at three lengths, allowing householders to screen visitors to the door, and ward off intruders.

Developed and owned by the inventor and Managing Director of Secure-Ring Ltd, Robert Service, Secure-Ring is claimed to be the only security door chain/restrictor in the world to be endorsed by the UK Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and achieve its rigorous Secured by Design (SBD) standard, which involves using a 'medicine ball' test that subjects security devices to the repeated force of a 30kg medicine ball - nearly twice the weight of a police battering ram.

Flintshire Community safety Partnership (CSP), a body of key agencies including the police, local authority, public, housing and voluntary organisations, is trialling Secure-Ring with Flintshire properties that have been identified as being susceptible to crime or incidents. Members of the partnership are already impressed with its credentials.

PC Hazel Goss MBE, Crime Prevention, Community Safety & Architect Liaison Officer for the North Wales Police, said: "As well as being the only device of its kind to achieve Secured by Design status, its design makes it easy to fit, easy to use and therefore appealing for particularly vulnerable groups including the elderly and children. That's important as if homeowners don't like using a product, they won't. I'm really pleased to be piloting the product in Flintshire and I've no doubt the results will be excellent."

Pauline and Charlie have had Secure-Ring fitted in their home as part of the trial. Pauline said: "My husband is elderly and visually impaired which makes fitting normal doors chains fiddly and tricky. Secure-Ring is simple to use, uses bold colour to create easily visible contrast and looks so strong that you just feel reassured by it. I actually run a social club for other visually impaired people and have no hesitation in recommending Secure-Ring to them for ease of use and peace of mind."

Secure-Ring is on show at this year's National Community Safety Network Conference, taking place on 7th/8th June in Manchester and at the Chartered Institute of Housing's, Housing 2011 Conference & Exhibition taking place on 21-23 June at Harrogate International Centre.

According to Gary Fisher, Senior Development Officer for ACPO Secured by Design, Secure-Ring is bound to receive a great deal of attention. He commented: "Secure-Ring has been built from the ground up with security in mind not as an afterthought - that's why it's the only one to hold the Secured by Design accreditation. It takes a familiar domestic technology, the door chain, to the next level.

"It's safe, simple and exceptionally strong. It is going to have a big impact on domestic security."

According to Cardea Solutions, the exclusive UK distributor for Secure-Ring, the Flintshire trial reflects the already strong demand for the product.
