Canadian Province introduces new security legislation

New provincial legislation has brought all companies and individuals providing security and investigative services in Alberta under the same legislation, resulting in enhanced standards, screening, training requirements, public safeguards, and accountability.

The Security Services and Investigators Act was proclaimed June 1 and replaces the 45-year old Private Investigators and Security Guards Act.

When representatives from Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies went out to talk to customers about the company’s technology they were taken aback at what they heard, says Steve Down, General Manager at Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies.

“We thought we knew what the customer wanted but when we started talking to them and found out where the pain points were, we were surprised,” he said. “It was around nervousness of where the technology is going.”

Emergency locksmith parking fine while helping a customer

An emergency locksmith was slapped with a parking fine while he was trying to help someone get back into their house, writes Sandish Shoker of the Coventry Telegraph.

Paul Stephenson, who runs Ball Hill Locksmiths, had left his van parked in a residents' parking bay while he dealt with the emergency at a flat in Greyfriars Road, city centre.

Training Course in understanding the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme

The International Professional Security Association (IPSA) has put together training for people who want to understand the inspection requirements of the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS). This follows on from reports that consultants have been approaching companies offering to assist with ensuring that they meet the requirements, but the company has subsequently failed the inspection.

A trial course was run by IPSA in March and, although it was initially marketed to individuals providing consultancy services, it was also taken up by some guarding companies wishing to have the experience in-house. Following on from this successful first run of the course, three further dates have been arranged across the country to take place next month. These are:

Better regulation of locksmith training is needed in a move to prevent criminals learning a highly lucrative trade, says Steffan George, Development Director at the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA), who called on the new Liberal Conservative coalition to make sure all organisations providing training had proper vetting procedures to keep undesirables out.
